Since many of us are about in the countyside a lot I was wondering if anyone was interested in squirrel reporting. As you all probably know the native red squirrel population is under threat from grey squirrels due to loss of habitat and disease. At the moment Moray is a buffer zone between the grey squirrels in Aberdeenshire and the Upper Spey Valley. There is a scheme where squirrel sightings can be reported to the Grampian sqirrel group at grampiansquirrelgroup.co.uk, clicking on the sqirrel sightins tab.
Some sightings of grey sqirrels have been made locally, near Elgin, Huntly and more recently Inverness. Unfortunately, there are no known statistics for the local red squirrel population. If anyone is interested in either ad hoc reporting or more structured sqirrel counting then please let me know.
